The short answer

Start with a fitted specification, then choose the head you can aim and pace consistently. Keep a written record of the entire build.

For a first L.A.B. Golf putter, decide the required length and lie before getting absorbed by colours, shafts and alignment options. The head must also suit your eye, but an attractive custom build cannot compensate for an awkward setup.

Learn the naming

L.A.B. Golf’s official model list includes LINK blades, MEZZ mid-mallets, DF mallets and OZ mallets. Similar family names can hide meaningful differences: MEZZ.1 MAX is larger than MEZZ.1, and DF3 is distinct from DF 2.1.

Fit, then shortlist

Use a normal stroke to establish length and lie. Next, compare two or three head shapes. Look for comfortable aim, clustered strike and predictable finishing distance. Treat “zero torque” as the maker’s description of face behaviour, not as a guarantee of makes.

Understand custom choices

Grip, shaft, colour and alignment choices may differ between stock and custom builds and can change over time. Check the live product configurator. If a particular option matters, save the confirmed order specification rather than relying on a photograph.

Before ordering

  • Confirm model and handedness.
  • Record playing length and lie angle.
  • Confirm grip, shaft and alignment.
  • Understand the seller’s delivery and return terms.

Build a two-model shortlist

Start with the address view rather than the finish colour. A player comfortable with a conventional blade can compare LINK.1 with one mid-mallet; a player already using a large mallet can compare DF 2.1 with a more compact DF or MEZZ shape. Keep length and lie suitable in both. Write down the two preferred heads before exploring custom shafts and colours, which prevents optional details from obscuring the main choice. The family guide helps with that first cut, and the accuracy protocol supplies the test.

Decision checkpoint: If the two finalists are close, repeat the test on another day or green speed. A putter that remains predictable across sessions provides stronger evidence than one impressive first trial.
