The short answer

A genuinely custom fitting links your posture, aim and stroke to an exact length, lie, loft, head and grip specification.

“Custom” should mean more than choosing a head from a rack. The fitting should connect observed tendencies to a defined length, lie, loft, head style, grip and weighting decision.

Custom starts with a baseline

Your current putter shows how you aim, where you strike the face and how you deliver loft at your habitual setup. Without that baseline, a recommendation can become little more than preference.

Specification follows evidence

Length should support a repeatable posture; lie should suit that setup; loft should produce a useful launch from the measured delivery. Head shape and alignment marks should help you present the face, while grip and weighting must preserve control.

Demand a buildable answer

Leave with actual measurements and any tolerances or assembly notes. “Blade” or “mallet” is a category, not a custom specification. The result should be detailed enough to adjust a compatible head or order a correctly built club.

See how one measurement changes another

Suppose a shorter test putter improves posture but makes the head feel too light. The useful response is not to abandon the length immediately: the fitter can test head or grip weight while preserving the setup. Likewise, a head that aims well may still need loft or lie work after its delivery is measured.

Our length-and-lie explanation shows why those numbers belong together. For the broader sequence from baseline to build, see the complete putter-fitting process.

Check the delivered club

When the club is adjusted or built, compare its measured length, lie and loft with the agreed sheet and confirm the grip and weighting. A fitting result is reproducible only when the finished club matches the tested configuration.
