The short answer

Give the fitted setup a fair trial, track start line and pace separately, and return for adjustment if a clear pattern persists.

The first rounds after a fitting are a validation period. Judge the putter by repeatable patterns rather than one good or bad day on unfamiliar greens.

Use a short settling period

Keep setup cues simple and play several sessions before judging the result. Different green speeds can disguise whether a pace problem comes from the club, the read or unfamiliar conditions.

Track two outcomes

Record start-line misses separately from distance misses. A repeated directional pattern may justify checking aim, lie or face delivery; random pace on one day may simply call for more exposure.

Return with evidence

If the same miss persists across several sessions, bring the examples and the recorded specification back to the fitter. Small adjustments should be based on a stable pattern rather than immediate doubt.

Run a simple three-distance check

Choose a straight short putt, a medium start-line putt and a long pace putt. Hit small sets from each spot over several practice sessions. Note the direction of misses and whether long putts repeatedly finish short or long. Do not turn total putts from one round into a fitting verdict because reads and first-putt distances vary.

Revisit the baseline-to-build guide if the recommendation is unclear. A persistent setup issue may be easier to interpret with the length-and-lie guide.

Let familiarity develop without forcing it

Keep the fitted settings stable during the initial check. Constantly changing grip position, added weights or alignment marks makes it impossible to tell whether you are adapting. Reassess only when a repeated, specific miss survives several sessions.

Note green speed and putt length so each pattern has context.
