The short answer

Length establishes your setup; lie should then let the head sit as intended. Treat the two measurements as connected.

Length and lie work together. Length influences posture and hand position; lie describes how the shaft and head sit in that setup.

Set length from posture

A suitable length lets you address the ball without crowding the grip or reaching for it. Choking down on an over-length putter can also change effective weight and where the grip sits in your hands.

Set lie in that posture

With length established, inspect how the head sits and how the shaft enters the setup. Lie changes should follow measured need; forcing the sole visually flat can be misleading if the head design has unusual geometry.

Recheck aim and delivery

A changed length or lie can alter eye position, face presentation and impact. Retest start line and pace, and confirm any bend is suitable for the putter’s material and construction. The R&A’s club-conformance rules provide the formal equipment framework.

Use measurements as a diagnosis

Toe-up or heel-up appearance alone does not prescribe a bend. First check whether the player is reaching, crowding the handle or changing hand height to accommodate the current length. Once posture is repeatable, measure lie and observe start direction. Any proposed alteration should then be retested.

The full fitting sequence places these checks beside aim, loft and head choice. If a shaft change is also planned, review putter-shaft compatibility and balance.

Include loft after setup

Static loft is only part of launch; hand position and shaft orientation alter delivered loft. Once length and lie support the intended posture, the fitter can observe delivery and decide whether a loft adjustment is warranted for that player and head.
